MLB ALCS & NLCS Preview: Where Our Model Breaks From the Market

Our experimental MLB model singled out nine prices across Dodgers–Brewers and Guardians–Rays. Here is the context behind each and where the market disagrees.

A dated market assessment. Prices and availability can change after publication.

Two games, nine prices to watch

Monday brings two League Championship Series games. In Milwaukee, the Dodgers try to even the NLCS after the Brewers won Game 1 2-1 on Sunday, with Milwaukee's bullpen closing it out after Jacob Misiorowski's start. At Tropicana Field, Cleveland opens the ALCS against Tampa Bay after coming back from two games down to beat the White Sox in the Division Series.

Our experimental MLB model singled out nine prices across the two games. This is a watchlist rather than a card of picks. The model has not been validated against betting prices, so each section below lays out what the model sees, what the market sees and what could prove either one wrong. Lineups had not been announced, so this preview covers game markets and the starting pitchers.

Dodgers–Brewers: a 6.5 total after a 2-1 opener

Four of the prices come from Milwaukee: the Dodgers moneyline at −128 (BetOnline), the Dodgers −1.5 run line at +143 (LowVig), Over 6.5 runs at −114 (BetRivers) and Yoshinobu Yamamoto under 6.5 strikeouts at +105 (BetMGM).

The first three rest on one projection: the Dodgers winning by about 1.4 runs in an 8.1-run game. The market is more cautious. With the bookmakers' margin removed, moneylines across books give Los Angeles about a 55% chance, against the model's 63.5%. They put the over near 52%, against the model's 63%, and the run line near 41%, against the model's 51%. Game 1 produced three runs in total.

Yamamoto starts Game 2 against Brewers rookie Logan Henderson. Over his last five starts, Yamamoto averaged 7.8 strikeouts and 6.8 innings on 92 pitches, including 10 strikeouts in seven innings at Atlanta on Oct. 6. The model still projects 6.5 strikeouts, right on the line, because it weighs his strikeout rate over a longer stretch of starts. The case for the under rests mostly on the plus-money price: the model gives it 53%, against about 47% from the market.

Henderson has gone exactly five innings in four of his last five starts. None of his prices made the list; the model's 53% for his under 15.5 outs is close to the market's 56%.

Guardians–Rays: how deep Rasmussen pitches is the central question

The other five come from Tampa Bay: the Rays −1.5 run line at +136 (FanDuel), Drew Rasmussen under 16.5 outs at even money (BetMGM), Rasmussen under 5.5 strikeouts at +110 (Bovada), and Foster Griffin over 3.5 strikeouts at −112 (DraftKings) and over 13.5 outs at −110 (BetMGM).

The Rasmussen outs under is the widest gap between the model and the market on the list, and the one to treat with the most caution. Rasmussen threw eight scoreless innings on 101 pitches, with 10 strikeouts, against the Yankees in his Division Series start on Oct. 3, and averaged 20.2 outs over his last five starts. The model projects 15.3 outs and gives the under 62%; the market prices it nearer 47%. Monday comes nine days after that start.

The strikeout under has a clearer basis. Cleveland has the lowest strikeout rate of the four lineups playing Monday, about 18.6% by the model's estimate, and the model projects 5.1 strikeouts against a line of 5.5, even though Rasmussen averaged seven over his last five starts.

Griffin starts Game 1 for Cleveland after splitting the regular season between Washington and Cleveland. His last five regular-season starts averaged 14 outs and 4.6 strikeouts on 80 pitches, and included a 2⅓-inning outing at Baltimore. He then struck out seven in 2⅔ relief innings in Game 3 of the Division Series on Oct. 7. The projection is built from his starts, so that relief appearance is not reflected in it. The model expects 14.0 outs and 4.2 strikeouts.

The pattern: more runs than the market expects

Taken together, most of these prices lean the same way. The model projects 8.1 runs in Milwaukee and 9.2 in Tampa Bay; both totals sit at 6.5. It also expects both favorites to win by more than a run, which is why both −1.5 run lines appear at plus money.

The model's single largest disagreement is not on the list. It gives Over 6.5 in Cleveland–Tampa Bay about a 70% chance, against roughly 52% from the market. A gap that wide on a postseason total calls for more scrutiny than one projection can provide, so we left it off. It is also a reason to read the other run-based prices with some caution.

Several prices also depend on one another. In Tampa Bay, a long Rasmussen outing would work against both of his unders at once, and a low-scoring game would make a two-run Rays margin harder to reach.

How much weight to give these

The model is experimental and has not been validated against betting prices, and its track record differs by market. In our published testing, strikeout projections have performed best, improving on a baseline forecast by 9.7% in regular-season testing and 15.7% against last year's postseason. Projections of how many outs a starter records have been less consistent: their calibration fell slightly outside our regular-season standard, though it met the postseason one. Moneyline and run-line projections improved on the baseline by less than 1%.

Prices are as of 9:08 a.m. ET Monday and will move, and lineups and late news can change the picture. Treat this as a guide to what to watch, not a verdict on either game.
