Ravens–Bills: Lamar Jackson's return meets a 54.5 total and a lower experimental estimate

Jackson is set to return and books list 54.5. Our experimental estimate, with inputs through Oct. 26, sits far lower, but that gap is not a proven edge.

A dated market assessment. Prices and availability can change after publication.

The hook: Jackson is back, and the total has not moved

Baltimore coach Jesse Minter said Friday that quarterback Lamar Jackson will start Sunday at Buffalo, according to CBS Sports. NFL.com, citing Minter's Friday remarks as well, reported that Jackson is off the injury report after a full week of practice. Both outlets relay the same coach comments, so we treat them as one underlying report, not independent confirmation. Jackson has not played since Week 4 because of a high ankle sprain, and CBS reports Baltimore lost its last two games without him.

In our snapshot, all eleven books listed the total at 54.5 as of 7:08 AM EDT Saturday, with no change from our 7:00 PM EDT Friday comparison. That is a market observation. We have no timestamped before-and-after quotes around the Jackson announcement, so we cannot say whether the news was priced in.

What the prices show

Our snapshot shows the number is identical while the juice differs. FanDuel listed over 54.5 at -105 and under at -115 at 7:12 AM EDT Saturday, and Fanatics listed the same prices at 7:13 AM EDT. BetUS and MyBookie.ag both listed -110 on each side at 7:12 AM EDT. LowVig.ag, part of the snapshot checked at 7:08 AM EDT Saturday, showed -107 on both sides.

That matters for price sensitivity. At the same line, the under costs more at FanDuel and Fanatics than at BetUS or MyBookie.ag, so the break-even rate for one view depends on the book chosen. CBS Sports' Week 8 odds page also covers this game, but its excerpt does not give the prices we cite here.

The experimental estimate and why it is not an edge

Fourth & Value's experimental totals model, with inputs through Oct. 26 (version nfl-totals-2026-w8-09124c1ed07e), estimates about 48.5 combined points: roughly 27.7 for Buffalo and 20.8 for Baltimore. It is a saved scoring estimate, not a current price. It has not been validated against betting prices, and it carries no calibrated fair price, win probability or injury adjustment. We do not call it an edge or a recommendation.

The date is the key limitation. Its inputs end Oct. 26, before Jackson's Friday clearance, and we have no measured sensitivity showing how Baltimore's quarterback status moves the estimate. We therefore cannot say his return would raise or lower it. The gap of roughly six points to 54.5 is a disagreement worth noting, not a demonstrated mispricing.

Matchup mechanics and the countercase

Per NFL.com, Jackson completed 70.8% of passes for 967 yards, six touchdowns and one interception in four starts. CBS adds that he averaged 7.6 yards per carry in his games. NFL.com also reports Tyler Huntley started the previous three games, with Baltimore going 1-2 in them. CBS reports the Ravens were blanked in the second half of last Sunday's loss. Those are reasons a market might expect more Baltimore scoring with Jackson than without him.

The countercase to a low-total lean is plain: a healthy Jackson against Josh Allen's offense could push scoring well past our estimate. The countercase to the over is the ankle. Jackson said it still hurts when he plants, though he called it bearable, and a limited running game would remove part of the scoring upside a 54.5 appears to assume. As of 7:14 AM EDT Saturday, none of the reporting we reviewed addressed weather or Buffalo's injury status, so we make no claim on either.

Conclusion and what would change it

Our position is a watchlist, not a pick. The market is unanimous at 54.5, the experimental estimate is far lower but dated and unvalidated, and the main news item, Jackson's return, cannot be tied to any price move. We would revisit if the number moved at several books after final inactives, if Jackson were limited in snaps or scrambling, or if the model were refreshed with inputs after his clearance. Until then, the defensible read is that the market expects a high-scoring game and our estimate does not, with no basis yet to say which is right.
