Cardinals–Cowboys: Jeremiyah Love's Return and Arizona's Rushing Role Against a 54.5 Total

Arizona's rookie back returns from a two-game absence while all 11 tracked books sit at 54.5. A dated experimental estimate is far lower, but that gap is not a proven edge.

A dated market assessment. Prices and availability can change after publication.

The hook: a rookie back returns to a high total

Arizona visits Dallas at 1:00 PM EST Sunday, and the most useful new reporting concerns the Cardinals' backfield. NFL.com reported Saturday afternoon that rookie running back Jeremiyah Love, the No. 3 overall pick, is back after a two-game absence to rest an ailing ankle. He said the time off helped him feel like himself again. CBS Sports described the injury as a high ankle sprain, so the two outlets describe it differently. As of 7:13 AM EST Sunday, neither NFL.com nor CBS Sports had reported Love's official game status, and neither outlet had said how many snaps he would take.

The market has not moved on any of this. All 11 books in our snapshot listed 54.5 at 7:13 AM EST Sunday, the same median as in the 7:19 PM EDT Saturday comparison. That flat line tells us nothing about what the market thinks of Love, because we have no timestamped quotes bracketing the NFL.com report.

What the Love numbers say

Through Week 7, CBS reports Love had played 34.4 percent of Arizona's offensive snaps in five games. He had 67 carries for 245 yards, 3.7 yards per carry, and one rushing touchdown. He also had 11 receptions for 36 yards and a touchdown. NFL.com puts Arizona's rushing attack 23rd in the league and says Love was hampered by the ankle for much of the season, having tweaked it again in Week 2. CBS says free agent Tyler Allgeier has taken a share of the work.

The mechanism matters for totals. A healthier lead back can lengthen drives if he produces more efficient early-down yardage, which also drains clock. The same improvement can trim possessions, which cuts against a high number. The reporting does not show whether Love will take more snaps than the 34.4 percent average, so any scoring effect is conditional inference, not an observed result.

Prices and the experimental estimate

Quotes were tight. Caesars listed 54.5 with the over at -112 and the under at -109 at 7:13 AM EST. BetRivers had -112 and -110 at 7:13 AM, LowVig.ag had -107 on both sides at 7:12 AM, and BetUS had -110 on both sides at 7:12 AM. The small spread in pricing reflects juice, not disagreement about the number.

Fourth & Value's experimental NFL totals estimate, built on data through October 26, put the combined score at about 45.1. It split that into roughly 25.4 for Dallas and 19.6 for Arizona. This is a raw scoring estimate, has not been validated against betting prices, and does not adjust for injuries, including Love's status. It is background from before the current quotes, not a fresh forecast, and it is not a calibrated fair price or win probability.

The gap of about nine points to the market is large, but a disagreement is not a proven edge. It could reflect stale inputs, a missing adjustment, or information the market holds that the estimate lacks. We do not treat it as a recommendation.

The countercase and the Baker wildcard

The case for a number near 54.5 rests on matchup factors that Fourth & Value's experimental estimate cannot see. The reporting says nothing about Dallas's defensive health or tendencies, and the experimental estimate carries no injury adjustment. A single rookie returning does not settle whether Arizona's offense will be efficient.

Arizona is 2-5, and CBS notes that safety Budda Baker faced trade-deadline questions on Friday. He gave a noncommittal answer and said his focus was on Dallas. CBS did not report that a deal was close or that his availability was in doubt. Even so, a defensive change would matter more to a total than a narrative about one runner, and we can only note it as unresolved.

Two CBS items come from the same outlet, so they are separate stories but not independent verification of each other. The Love report is also partly his own account of how he feels, which is not an official injury designation.

What would change the view

Our stance is a watchlist, not a pick. Several developments would sharpen it: Love's official availability and snap share, any change in Arizona's defensive personnel before kickoff, and Dallas's injury report. A rerun of the experimental estimate with current inputs would also help, though even then it would remain unvalidated against prices.

If the total moves, the useful test is timestamped quotes before and after a specific piece of news, not an inference from the move alone. Until then, 54.5 looks like a consensus market that Fourth & Value's experimental estimate currently disagrees with, and the reporting does not explain why. Passing is a reasonable position.
