A dated market assessment. Prices are from our 7:07–7:08 a.m., 11:58 a.m. and 4:32 p.m. EDT checks on Friday, Oct. 23, and can change before first pitch.

A first title, either way

Game 1 is tonight at 8:00 PM EDT at American Family Field, with Jacob Misiorowski facing Nick Martinez. The Brewers (103-59) had the best record in baseball and are in their first World Series since 1982. The Rays (98-64) won the AL East and are in their third. Neither franchise has won one. Milwaukee hosts Games 1 and 2. Games 3 and 4, and Game 5 if needed, are at Tropicana Field Monday through Wednesday; Games 6 and 7, if needed, return to Milwaukee.

Brewers: pitching first, and the bats woke up late

Milwaukee won 103 games with a +214 run differential, and it did it without much power: 154 home runs, near the bottom of the majors, alongside a 3.51 team ERA that ranked second.

That profile carried into October. The Brewers beat San Diego 3-1 in the Division Series without scoring more than four runs in any game (3-2, 4-3, a 4-3 loss and 3-1), then swept the two-time defending champion Dodgers 2-1, 7-4, 6-2 and 6-4. That is 13 runs in the NLDS and 21 in the NLCS. Across eight playoff games they have allowed 21 runs, about 2.6 a game.

Misiorowski is the presumptive NL Cy Young winner: 16-5 with a 1.80 ERA and 252 strikeouts in 174⅔ innings. October has been messier. He threw 88 pitches in four innings in Game 1 of the NLDS and 94 in 4⅓ innings in Game 1 of the NLCS. Hitters have swung and missed less than in the regular season, and foul balls have run up his counts. He starts tonight on 11 days’ rest. Brandon Woodruff, back from a long shoulder layoff, is on the World Series roster.

Rays: a sweep, then a comeback

Tampa Bay won 98 games and the AL East with a +86 run differential, going 55-26 at home. It swept the Yankees in the Division Series, 1-0, 5-2 and 4-3, with Drew Rasmussen carrying a no-hit bid into the seventh inning of the opener. It then fell behind Cleveland two games to one in the ALCS before winning three straight: 7-3, 3-1 and 7-3. Rasmussen threw seven innings of one-run ball in Game 5. Freddy Peralta won Game 2, then gave up one run over 5⅓ innings in the Game 6 clincher, when Junior Caminero and Yandy Díaz homered.

The Rays have allowed 23 runs in nine playoff games, also about 2.6 a game, and three or fewer in eight of the nine. They have scored 3.9 a game.

Starting Martinez in Game 1 was a surprise. Kevin Cash said Rasmussen has carried a heavy workload and gave him an extra day before Game 2. Martinez had a 3.10 ERA over a career-high 180 innings, and the Rays won both of his playoff starts. “When Nick pitches, we win,” Cash said.

They met once, in March

The only regular-season series was March 30 to April 1 in Milwaukee, and the Brewers took two of three. Tampa Bay won the opener 3-2 on a ninth-inning double by Nick Fortes. Martinez, making his Rays debut, worked six innings on 88 pitches and allowed two runs, both on a William Contreras homer in the sixth. Milwaukee won the next two games 6-2 and 8-2, and Misiorowski pitched six innings against the Rays in that series.

That was the first week of the season, so treat it as a scouting note rather than a trend. It is still the only time Martinez has faced this lineup this year, and he recorded 18 outs.

What the markets are saying

Milwaukee is a clear favorite. At our 7:08 a.m. EDT check, Game 1 moneylines ran from −173 to −200 on the Brewers across 11 books, with the Rays at +152 to +165. With the bookmakers’ margin removed, the consensus gave Milwaukee 62.6%. That is almost exactly how the whole series is priced: reported series odds this week had the Brewers around −170 to −180, and Kalshi traders put them near 63%.

The Game 1 total is 6.5 at every book we track, and it had not moved by our 11:58 a.m. EDT check, though most books were charging a little more for the over (−107 to −115). That is at the low end for both teams: the consensus totals on their playoff games so far have ranged from 6.0 to 7.5.

Against the last pre-game total our price checks recorded, Brewers playoff games have gone over three times and under four times, with a push: unders in four of the first five, then overs in each of the last three NLCS games as Milwaukee scored 19 runs. In the seven Rays games where we have a line, it is three overs, three unders and a push. Neither is a reason to bet tonight’s 6.5 on its own.

The run line is where results have been one-sided. Tampa Bay has lost by two or more runs once in nine playoff games, 7-3 in Game 1 of the ALCS; Rays +1.5 was priced at −143 to −158 this morning. Milwaukee has won by two or more in four of its eight games, three of them in the NLCS.

Our experimental game model is much higher on scoring than the market, at about 9.4 projected runs against 6.5, and it rates the Rays close to a coin flip in Game 1. Our analyst review passed on both. The run projection may be slow to reflect the pitching both teams have shown in October, and the model’s own inputs lean Milwaukee in a way its near-even moneyline does not explain. Neither is on our card.

Our two picks: how long the starters last

Both picks on today’s card are about the starters’ length, and they come from one disagreement. Books set Misiorowski’s outs line two outs higher than Martinez’s, 15.5 against 13.5, so they expect him to go about two outs deeper. Our experimental model has the two nearly even: 14.4 projected outs for Misiorowski and 14.1 for Martinez. Prices below are from 7:07 to 7:08 a.m. EDT.

Late price check, 4:32 p.m. EDT. Most books had since moved Martinez down to 12.5 outs and Misiorowski up to 16.5. FanDuel still offered Martinez over 13.5, now at +102; BetMGM had Misiorowski at 16.5, under −120. Those new lines are different bets from the ones on our card, which stand as published at the morning prices. Our afternoon edition also added two Game 1 hitter props; they are on today’s picks.

Nick Martinez over 13.5 outs (+108, FanDuel)

Why we like it. The line asks for 14 outs, or 4⅔ innings. Martinez averaged about 17½ outs per start in the regular season (180 innings over 31 starts) and 16.7 over his last 15. He recorded 16 outs on 79 pitches in ALCS Game 4, retiring 11 straight at one point, and 18 against this Brewers lineup in March. He pitches to contact, with 109 strikeouts in 180 innings, and that has kept his counts low: about 16 pitches an inning over his last five starts. At +108 he needs to clear the line 48% of the time. The model gives him 62%.

The case against. His last five starts averaged 13.6 outs, pulled down by a 2⅔-inning outing at Philadelphia in the final week of the season and 3⅔ innings in ALDS Game 3 at Yankee Stadium. Cash has a rested bullpen after three days off, and Game 1 of a World Series invites a quick hook. The market disagrees as well: with the margin removed, five books put the over at 47%. Our own review called the case narrow, because one early hook decides it.

Jacob Misiorowski under 15.5 outs (even money, BetMGM)

Why we like it. Sixteen outs is 5⅓ innings, and Misiorowski has not reached that in either playoff start: 12 outs against San Diego and 13 against the Dodgers. He has needed about 22 pitches an inning this October (182 pitches for 25 outs). At that rate, 16 outs would take about 116 pitches, well beyond the 94 he threw in Game 1 of the NLCS. He has cleared 15.5 once in his last five starts, which averaged 13 outs on 75 pitches. The Rays also strike out less than most lineups, about 20% of plate appearances by the model’s estimate, so his strikeout stuff may not turn into quick innings. The model gives the under 59.5%; even money needs 50%.

The case against. He is the best pitcher in the series, he is on 11 days’ rest, and over the full season he averaged about 17½ outs a start. The Brewers believe they have addressed what went wrong in his first two October starts, and a fresh arm could make them look like a blip. Five books put the under at 47% with the margin removed, so the market leans the other way.

The two picks are in the same game, but they are not a hedge. One needs Cash to leave Martinez in; the other needs Pat Murphy to take Misiorowski out. A quiet night for both offenses would help the Martinez over and hurt the Misiorowski under.

How much weight to give these

The model is experimental and has not been validated against betting prices. Its starter-outs projections have tested weaker than its strikeout projections. In our published testing, outs projections improved on a baseline forecast by 9.2% in regular-season games and 4.3% against last year’s postseason, and in both tests they projected more outs on average than starters actually recorded: 15.6 against 14.4 in the regular season, and 16.2 against 14.3 in the postseason. That tendency makes the Misiorowski under the sturdier of the two and the Martinez over the thinner one.
